Traffic Information

A decision to close the road may be made by any of four bodies; the highways authorities or the police forces of the two counties, and the pub may be accessible from Buxton or Macclesfield but not both. So it is not easy to learn the concensus.

Check the BBC Travel News pages
for Derbyshire and for Cheshire
(The updates are frequent and time-stamped.
Check both pages because they are updated at different times).

The Twitter feed below is from the landlords of the Cat.

Please don’t phone the pub asking for traffic information.

The live webcam updates every minute, and together with the Twitter feed, is provided as a public service, to avoid staff taking time off their work to answer lots of phone enquiries about the road conditions.

If you watch the webcam for a few minutes you will learn about the movement of traffic. The smaller "Previous cat-cam picture" (on the left) makes it easier to detect changes in the picture.

The above archive picture shows the black strip of the road as it cleared after a heavy snow fall.

The road is given a high priority by gritting teams, and there are large display signs at the foot of the hill in Macclesfield and Buxton which indicate whether the Police consider the road safe to use.

Motorists and outdoor activity enthusiasts will this week be able to check out the weather on top of the A537 Cat and Fiddle pass from the comfort of their desks.

Landlords of the Cat & Fiddle Inn, Ben and Rebecca have joined forces with local information website MaccInfo.com to host a webcam showing the A537 road and the view towards the west.

“In winter, a lot of people worry about the road conditions on the Cat and Fiddle pass, and we hope this camera will allow them to see for themselves just by logging onto www.cat-cam.co.uk.  Walkers, cyclists and flyers can also see if the weather is promising for their sport too,” said Ben. "Sometimes it is the opposite of what you might expect. The Cat & Fiddle can be in sunshine, above the cloud, when the valleys are shrouded in mist".

The newly installed landlords, Ben and Rebecca, plan to develop this traditional English pub with welcoming open fires in winter, and incomparable views of the setting sun on summer’s evenings.

Set apart from its conventional dining room and lounge bar, the Cat & Fiddle caters separately for hill-walkers and cyclists in Moorland Bar. Here footwear isn’t a problem, and tea, coffee and snacks are available from 11.00 each day.

Ben is keen to use local Cheshire and Derbyshire produce in his new menu of home made dishes.

If you want an even better view over the Peak District hills, the Cat & Fiddle also serves as a base for helicopter flights.  Families often buy a flight for Mum or Dad as a birthday present, and then they all come to watch, and then meet afterwards in our dining room for a family meal together.
